Thanksgiving, eh?

Did you know that Americans did not invent the Thanksgiving holiday? It may come as a surprise to many, but Canadians actually had Thanksgiving, with turkey and all the trimmings, 43 years before the pilgrims gave thanks in 1641 for the bounty that ended a year of hardships.

There are many similarities between the celebrations in these two countries. Aside from turkey and pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving is a day set aside to celebrate and give thanks for the year’s harvest, to gather with loved ones and enjoy a feast as you reflect upon the blessings of the year. The major difference between the American and Canadian holiday, is the date. Whereas in America the holiday is the fourth Thursday in November, Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. And we think that is an additional reason to be thankful, since you can easily have two Thanksgivings every year.

The Shaw Festival

When it began in 1962 , The Shaw Festival was just a small production of two plays under the direction of a local lawyer and playwright, with a goal of stimulating interest in George Bernard Shaw and his period, and advancing theatre arts in Canada. That small festival has grown to almost cult status. Thousands flock to Niagara Falls each year to take part in the non-profit festival.

Eleven performances will be presented this year at the festival, which runs through mid-October.   The productions take place in four theaters: The Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre, the Royal George Theatre and the Studio Theatre.

Shaw FestivalProductions include Cabaret, a rare musical set in one of the hottest nightclubs in Berlin, during Hitler’s rise; The Philadelphia Story, a classic romantic comedy which revived the career of Katherine Hepburn in the 1930s; and The Mountaintop, a hilarious and heartbreaking visit with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in his room at the Lorraine Motel after his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech.
