The perfect time to visit Memphis, Tennessee is the week of August 10-18th. Why, you may ask? Well, these dates mark the always-anticipated event known as Elvis Week. Elvis Week is the week to go to Memphis for any fans of the King. Throughout the week, a variety of events will be taking place all over the city for the perfect dedication to the king of rock and roll. Here are a few of the top events going on throughout the week.
The Hard Rock Last Chance Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest:
While there are a variety of great activities going on every day, the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest is the most highly anticipated. The contest takes place on Friday, Sunday and Monday at the Hard Rock Cafe, and the winner lands a spot in the Semifinal Round One of the 2012 Ultimate ETA Contest. On Friday, doors open at 9:00 p.m. and the show starts at 10. Sunday and Monday, doors open at 5, while the show starts at 6. See some of the best tribute artists of the King from all around the world. An admission fee of $5 is required for each night.
On Friday, August 17th, the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest Semifinal begins. At the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts at 10:00 p.m., head over to catch the first round of this incredible and challenging competition. Round two begins later that night at 7:00 p.m., and the final round takes place the next day at the same time.
30th Annual Elvis Presley 5K Run Benefiting Livitup, Inc.:
This race starts and ends at the gates of Graceland on Saturday, August 11th. After you’ve competed, meet up with Livitup, Inc. at Elvis Presley Park, across the street from Graceland, for an exciting party under the tent. Food, music and great entertainment will all be featured during this event. The race starts at 8:00 a.m.
Elvis Week Dance Party:
After the tribute contest on Monday the 13th, head over to Graceland for the ultimate dance party. Elvis Radio DJ Argo will be cranking out your favorite hits from the King. Tickets are $25; event lasts from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Double Feature Movie Events:
Head over to the Main Stage Entertainment Pavilion in Graceland for an Elvis double feature. On Sunday, August 12th, you can catch “Jailhouse Rock” and “Viva Las Vegas.” Tuesday, come again for “Love Me Tender” and “Clambake.” Tickets are $5 and the event starts at 10:30 p.m. each night.
Memorial Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Elvis Presley:
At 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, head to the St. Paul Catholic Church for a service in dedication to Elvis. Music begins at 2:15.
Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Gates of Graceland, walk up the driveway to the gravesite of Elvis for your chance to pay quiet tribute to the king. Gates are open until every guest has had their chance at the grave. No admission fee is required. Event usually takes place until the early hours of August 16th, the anniversary of Elvis’ death.
Elvis 35th Anniversary Concert:
On Thursday, the 16th, make sure you meet up in downtown Memphis at the FedExForum, where you can catch the King back in concert. You’ll see some of his best performances projected on a large video screen. On stage, he’ll be backed up by a talented cast of singers and musicians, an orchestra and more. Special guests are scheduled to make an appearance at the concert, which starts at 8:00 p.m. These guests include, but are not limited to, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, DJ Fontana, the Sweet Inspirations, The Imperials, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and more.
