It is a festive time of year in Orlando and surrounding areas as this weekend will be the host of several different events ranging from film festivals to Puerto Rican celebrations. Put your party hat on, and get ready to dance to some jazz music or partake in the spreading of global peace depending on which of these events you plan on attending in the upcoming days. If you’re feeling up to it, you might as well spend a day at each of them!
Yesterday, September 20th, the Global Peace Film Festival began at the Orlando Science Center and will commence through Sunday the 25th. This event was established to promote world peace, not in relation to specific causes like anti-war protests, but for the betterment of communities and environments around the globe.
Personal messages are reflected from the power of motion pictures during this awareness celebration, and such films are shown throughout the five day festival. Movies span across many genres: documentaries, comedies, dramas, etc. In addition to the featured films, many activists will be displaying their art, hosting educational panels, and letting you know how to get involved. Passes can be purchased for the entire festival or for single days. If you’re a movie buff or are inspired to get involved in the spreading of peace, then don’t miss the Global Peace Film Festival!
Bring your kids out to Central Florida Zoo to help celebrate the 6th annual Fiesta del Coqui. In 2006, the zoo acquired a collection of rare Puerto Rican Coqui frogs which are known for the melodic sounds and songs that they make. Since the zoo did not have any species from the Hispanic regions of the world prior to the frogs, the Fiesta del Coqui festival was born to honor Puerto Rican and other Hispanic cultures. On Saturday and Sunday, the property will host a variety of musical performances, dancing demonstrations, and food dishes that are native to Latino cultures. Come out to the zoo this weekend for an incredible time that will be educational too. And don’t forget to visit the Coqui amphibian exhibit while you’re there!
For those who are more into music, rather than films, the 11th annual New Smyrna Beach Jazz Festival is going on all weekend as well. The kick-off party will be on Friday, the 23rd, at Toni & Joe’s Patio, and following the party, Saturday and Sunday will offer two full days of free jazz group shows featuring some of the greatest jazz musicians from around the country. Concerts on the 24th-25th will take place on Flagner Avenue and Third Avenue, hosted by various venues. Don’t miss this chance for a fun weekend with top quality music, good crowds, and a chance to support the music community of the area. Plus, it’s free!
